An Exhibition Exploring Body, Material and the Erotic Politic

Intimate Orientations, is a solo exhibition by artist Stphanie Spindler exploring body as material, site, and boundaries. Through sculpture installation, process-based work and performance questions intimacy through touch, proximity, materiality and power.

In a cultural moment of multiplicity, overwhelm and disembodiment, Intimate Orientations questions the framework and boundary of meaning through ordinary moments of corporeality. The exhibition foregrounds questions about position, location, carnality, and impermanence. Through material gestures, impressions, accumulations, imprints, folds and stains Spindler explores spaces where private experience meets public encounters.

The investigation frames intimacy as political and spatial; obeisance to historical women artists that draws attention to how female sexed bodies are positioned socially, culturally and architecturally and how orientations is as much about desire and longing and rejecting conventional rhetoric that flattens the experience of living.

“The hierarchy of the visible terrorizes the tangible,” says Spindler. “If I can liberate the perspective by transforming the frame, can meaning be felt in the intimacy of the erotic politic?”

The Exhibition is part of the two solo member exhibitions at Pirate Contemporary, Intimate Orientations Stephanie Spindler, Sophia Ericksen and guest artist, Manda Remmen.
