The Search for Meaning: exploring the common denominators between art and therapy.
By Stephanie Spindler, Contemporary Artist

To be vulnerable is the subject matter. The common denominators between contemporary art and therapy are confrontation, emotive responses and awareness. Art and therapy are both transgressive acts. Transgressions are when we break the boundaries of society, where boundaries are challenged by the representation of unconventional behaviour and the use of experimental forms. The differences are private and public yet the aims are the same; the search for meaning.
To be vulnerable is a sign of weakness within our culture. To be an artist is to be vulnerable and to let the authenticity of our work speak for the idea. The artist uses the processes of contemplation, awkwardness, repulsion, delight and inspiration as cultural expression to intentionally break down separations between private and public, to emphasise the personal, to provoke and encourage critical thought.
I will use contemporary examples of art that reflect therapy-like content that evoke cultural need, shared values and exigencies, to examine the similarity of the aims of art and therapy, the collective and the personal. Vulnerability is linked to relationships public and private defined by language, emotive responses, and behaviour; this link defines a collective attitude and will be explored and compared to contemporary art.
